Features in Family Tree Maker 2008
Please be wary if you are tempted to order Family Tree Maker 2008 on the Ancestry (USA) website in response to an e-mail. The $39.95 does not include the $13 international shipping charge which you do not see until after you have entered your card details. Also, the package is likely to be subjected to 17.5% VAT on the $52.95 when it enters the UK because it is over the £18 threshold, and there will also be a £4.50 Royal Mail charge for collecting the VAT, plus a trip to Royal Mail to collect the package and pay the VAT and the £4.50. Our price for the UK Edition is only £19.90 with free delivery which is about £15 less than the total USA price for the USA Edition.
Boxshots and screenshots illustrating Family Tree Maker 2008
Family Tree Maker 2008 has been totally rewritten from the ground up. There is no code from previous versions in FTM 2008. Family Tree Maker 2008 should be regarded as a new program rather than an upgrade from previous versions. Family Tree Maker 2008 sports a completely redesigned interface and database that makes it easier to enter, view and edit information. The Check For An Update facility in the Help menu is expected to provide free downloads of more features over the coming weeks and months (you will receive automatic notification of program updates if you opt for "Automatically check for program updates when connected to the internet" option in the Tools menu - Options). The new programing code allows for optional plug-in extra features that may be provided by third parties in the future.
Workspaces There are seven areas or workspaces within Family Tree Maker 2008 -- Plan, People, Places, Media, Sources, Publish, and Web Search. The Menu items are: File, Edit, View, Source, Tools, Help. All of the areas except for Plan have resizable panes that may be dragged or collasped. Person Notes, Fact Notes, Source Notes and Media Notes can all be formatted and privatised.
There are four work areas in the Family tab, each of which may be resized to suit your requirements, allowing wonderful flexibilty.
The second tab in the People area is the Person tab, providing even more editing flexibility. Within this tab there are three options to work with: Facts, Timeline and Relationships. The lower pane is available to record separate Person Notes and Research Notes. The notes area has much more flexibility in style and presentation including bold, italic, underline, bulllets, symbols, colour, spellcheck (nine spellcheck dictionaries to choose from including United Kingdom English and Australian English), and text note size. Also available in the lower pane is an Add Task facility (reminders of things that you need work on). You can schedule tasks to be due on a certain date or leave them open. You can also assign a priority to tasks so you can see what needs to be completed first. There are two types of tasks: general tasks and person tasks; with options to record description, category/location, due date, priority and completion. The timelines highlight personal, family and world events that occurred during your ancestors’ lives. Also provide is a robust tool for sorting and managing your to-do list.
The place authority is also a great tool to clean up and standardise all of your Family Tree Maker places. Places and Descriptions are now separated which is much more logical and far easier to manage.
Sources and Citations are now linked, eliminating the need for most copying and pasting. The left hand pane lists your Source Groups that may be sorted and searched by All Source-Citations, Source Titles, Repository or People. The right hand pane has edit boxes for Source Titles, Citation Detail, Citation Text and Reference Notes. The lower pane has a list of people that are linked to each source, Notes, links to media such as census images, photographs, audio and video clips etc. Standardised source rating criteria encourages you to assign a confidence score to each piece of information that you gather.
Service Patch 2
"In the coming months we will be adding many new features and templates to the Ancestry Press book building tool. We are also working to improve the integration between Family Tree Maker and Ancestry Press."
"We are developing a desktop book building tool that we will provide free of charge to all Family Tree Maker 2008 customers next summer (2008). This tool will allow you to print your book from home or, if you prefer, create a PDF that you can have professionally printed and bound through the Ancestry Press book printing service or another vendor of your choice."

Limitations Of Family Tree Maker 2008
"Unfortunately, because the software has been completely redesigned using a new code base, we cannot provide full support for books created in previous versions of Family Tree Maker. If you have produced a book in Family Tree Maker 2005, 2006 or 16, you will eventually be able to export a PDF version of your book to Ancestry Press to have it professionally printed; however, you will not be able to edit your book in Ancestry Press, Family Tree Maker 2008 or future versions."
Family Tree Maker 2008 will install itself completely separately from previous versions. You may therefore continue to use your old version, and even use both versions at the same time if you wish. It is recommended that you retain your old version while you are getting to know 2008. The new code and database in FTM 2008 benefits from the power and faster speed available in modern computer hardware.
Important. Update 28th November 2007. Service Patch 2 Revision 2 (version 17.0.0.559) has been released incorporating more reports, more charts, performance enhancements and bug fixes. If you are not notified of the availability of SP2 when you start Family Tree Maker 2008, please click the Help menu and Check For Update. If you receive a message that your version is already up to date, click the Help menu again and About Family Tree Maker. Check the version number. If it is not 17.0.0.559 please visit here for full instructions on how to obtain and install SP2.
If you are encountering difficulty importing your Family Tree Maker family file into 2008 it is recommended that you first compact your family file in your old version of Family Tree Maker. For example in FTM 2006 and v16 go to the Tools menu and Compact File. In other versions use the keyboard keys CTRL+ALT+C for file compression, and CTRL+ALT+SHFT+UpArrow for file checking. A list of helpful shortcut keys may be viewed here.
If you are receiving messages that you are not connected to the internet while using FTM 2008, or if the internet functions in 2008 such as the maps and web searching do not work, please take a look at your firewall settings and allow Family Tree Maker to access the internet.

Unprecedented Flexibility
Family
Tree Maker can handle all kinds of information about millions of your
relatives. This includes anything from basic names, dates, and places to
more personal information. For example, it stores pages of notes, such
as stories, favorite jokes, and recipes; nicknames and special titles;
height, weight and medical information; addresses and phone numbers; information
about special family relationships, such as adoptions, divorces, and re-marriages;
and other quick facts and dates, such as graduation, baptism, and burial.
In addition, you can introduce multimedia elements into your family records by placing video clips, audio clips, and even scanned documents into Family Tree Maker's Scrapbooks. Print the widest variety of family trees and reports. Family Tree Maker delivers the most attractive and versatile printouts you'll find. You and your loved ones will treasure these heirlooms for years.
Family
Tree Maker's Scrapbooks preserve your family's true character - the sights,
sounds, and stories that go beyond just names and dates. You can include
photos, video and audio clips, and even scanned images. Scrapbooks accept
Kodak Photo CD pictures, TIF files, BMP files and other common file formats
. And, once you've placed everything you want into a Scrapbook, you can
impress your family by creating multimedia "slide shows," where each item
in a Scrapbook is displayed sequentially for the number of seconds that
you choose. You can also print Scrapbook albums, choosing how many images
are on each page, the style and colour of the text and borders, and whether
or not to include page numbers.
Use Family Tree Maker to look for family information on Family Archive CDs - available from us as separate CDs. We stock all the CDs in this range applicable to British and Irish research. We can supply any of the CDs in the Family Tree Maker/Broderbund/Genealogy.com range. These CDs provide dates, places, and other details on people who appear in centuries of records. All you need to know is a relative's approximate last name, and the FamilyFinder Index will tell you exactly which Family Archive CD has more information. This way, you can quickly make progress right from your own computer.
"Sources" database tracks your research with expert efficiency. Keeping an organised record of your information sources is one of the cornerstones of genealogy. It allows you and future generations to follow your exact research steps in case some of the information is ever called into question. To keep track of the sources you've used in your family history research (such as family Bibles, wedding albums, or government records), Family Tree Maker has a
sophisticated new system that tracks all your sources in detail. Each source has its own notecard-style screen where you list the source's title, author, reliability, and other details. You only need to record each source once - then, whenever you include information from it in your Family File, you can "point" to its listing in your Master Sources database. Of course, you're not limited to just one source for each piece of information (such as a name, date, or location) - you can list as many sources as you have.
A Family Book combines your choice of printouts - such as Ancestor trees, Family Group Sheets, Kinship reports, and narrative Genealogy reports - and assembles them into one continuous document. You can include page numbers, a list of source citations, and more. Family Tree Maker can automatically generate a Table of Contents and an Index that shows all the pages where each individual appears. Just drag and drop the printouts you want to include...it's that easy! Family Books can also include free-form text pages, so you can record heart-warming stories that go beyond the names and dates. And you
can bring your stories to life by inserting pictures! It's like having
a word processor right inside Family Tree Maker.
Now you can create a lasting record of all those special times - anniversary parties, vacations, holidays, reunions - to preserve the true character and spirit of your family. Once you've selected the trees, reports, and stories to include in your book, one click of the "Print" command puts it all together. Better yet, you're not limited to just one style of Family Book. You can design several different Family Books and specify what to include in each. Whenever you want, you can edit the contents of existing Family Books or create more new Family Books. Genealogy reports automatically create narrative family histories.
When it's time to print your family information, Register (descendant ordered), NGS Quarterly (descendant ordered), and Ahnentafel (ancestor ordered) reports are the recognized way to publish family information in text format (as opposed to chart format). Writing one of these reports by hand would take several hours. Instead, Family Tree Maker can create them for you instantly - complete with your choice of fonts, layouts, and information. It takes names, dates, notes, sources, and other information in your family file, and automatically weaves them into a narrative story. You'll read about
each generation in real sentences instead of just bare facts. Use them
in your family books, or attach them to your user home page to share you family history with others. Book Layout trees show up to 99 generations without splitting boxes. For trees larger than one page, Family Tree Maker can neatly split your tree onto as many standard-size pages as it takes, labeling each split with the page number where that branch is continued. With Book Layout trees, boxes are never cut in half on page breaks. Each person's entire box is printed on a given page, and (if necessary) reprinted in connection with generations on later pages.
This computerized "How-To" Guide is your expert family history companion. It tells you how to start, whom to contact, what to ask, and more. Topics range from doing overseas research to interpreting centuries-old handwriting. Built-in form letters and address directories make requesting official county records simple. The "How-To" Guide is also available online right here on Family Tree Maker Online. But it's handy to have an extra copy of it on your Family Tree Maker CD-ROM for quick reference.

Plan is the area that you see when you start Family Tree Maker 2008. There are options to create a new tree (previously called family file) from scratch or to import data from any of these sources
A new People interface that combines elements of a pedigree chart and a family group sheet. The Family tab of the People view is the main working area of Family Tree Maker 2008; combining the old family card, family view, pedigree view and editing areas, all into one single screen that is far more intuitive and much easier and faster to use. The editing area is customisable, so you can now have birth, baptism, marriage, death and burial edit boxes all available at the same time and they will always be there for you in the future! In fact you can customise this area to include or exclude whichever edit boxes you wish. Great!
Now this is really exciting! Dynamic mapping of the places where your ancestors came from via Microsoft Virtual Earth within Family Tree Maker. The Places area incorporates a place authority of more than 3 million place names worldwide including a large number of UK parishes. Click on a place in the list of places in the left hand pane and see displayed a list of the people in your database that are associated with that place in the right hand pane. At the same time in the centre pane a map of the area is displayed that may easily be zoomed to street, road and building level! Choose between normal mapping, aerial photography (bird's eye view), or a hybrid of the two. Street and road names are displayed. Click the 3D button and 'fly' around the area where your ancestor's lived in 3D colour. It's really neat and very impressive!
Family Tree Maker gathers together all of your photographs, images and other media into one place. No more hunting around individual scrapbooks to find where you put that photo. The Media area *links* your media in from the place where it is saved on your hard disk. Multiple links can be created from one photo to numerous people. The result is no more enormous FTM file sizes because the media is not saved within the FTM file. The FTM 2008 backup facility however has the option to automatically backup your media at the same time as backing up your data. Importing family files from previous versions of Family Tree Maker automatically links your scrapbook media into the Media area. Images can be linked to individuals, facts and sources.
It is extremely important to record the sources of all the information that you find during your family history research. The Sources area makes this task really easy.
The Publish area includes the various types of output from Family Tree Maker 2008, including:
There are many Share/Export options including a new Send To E-mail facility in formats that include HTML, PDF, CSV, RFT, BMP, EMF, WMF, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIF. Heirloom quality books are created using the new Ancestry Press self-publishing tool. The Publish area has a mini-navigation area at the top making it easy to refocus on another person in your tree.
Web Searching is tightly integrated with Ancestry.co.uk and is vastly improved. Our own testing confirms that Web Searching for UK people via Family Tree Maker 2008 on Ancestry is very good indeed, assuming that you have suitable basic information to start with. Integration with rootsweb.com, genealogy.com, google.com, yahoo.com and search.live.com is also provided. The powerful Web Clipping facility allows the capture of text from *any* website that you care to visit - all within Family Tree Maker. Merging of information from any of those websites with your own data is optional and is fully under your control. The Browser pane allows you to visit any website. The Web Search area has a mini-navigation area at the top making it easy to refocus on another person in your tree.
Please bear in mind that Family Tree Maker 2008 is a totally new program and is a work in progress. The publishers have announced that some features that are currently missing in 2008 compared with previous versions will be added in the coming months via free download updates.

Family Tree Maker 2008 UK Edition Release Date Information
Some minor bugs in Family Tree Maker 2006 have been fixed.
The new Individuals To Include allows you to focus the report right down to an individual, date or date range as in other Family Tree Maker reports. You can now tailor your Source Usage Report to include only what you wish to focus on. There is also a new "Hide master sources with no citations associated with them" option that makes the report a more manageable size.
This facility now works correctly, drilling down the list automatically as you type -- not just going to the first letter as before.
This is an additional Edit button that takes you directly to a New Master Source dialogue box assisting you to quickly add a new master source to your list.
Some editions of Family Tree Maker 2006 come with the easy to use Charting Companion, worth over £14. Charting Companion lets you view, customise, print and publish generations of your family tree. Choose from a variety of formats and more than 16 million colours. Even create your own custom colours. Includes a new bow-tie tree (like an hourglass tree on it's side) and a very nice full circle fan chart. To install Charting Companion, insert the Family Tree Maker 2006 CD, skip the tour, and click on Bonus Software.
And now you can enter about thirty-two times as many notes in the Notes field - up to 1MB of text - about 250 pages instead of 8 pages, allowing you to capture an individual's entire story! You can quickly see your sources and update your data.
Family Tree Maker continues to ease important data entry tasks. The new and improved Edit Individual box simplifies the process of entering basic information about a person from the Pedigree view. It also makes it easier for you to see related sources for that person. Changes to the Edit Individual dialog enable you to enter an individual's data from almost any location in the program.
Make sure you never lose your family history. Protect your Family Tree Maker data against computer failure by storing your own private backup copy on the Family Tree Maker secure servers. Store up to 3GB in a password-protected online location only you can access. This storage space is free to you for the first three months.
Manage sources better than ever before. Advanced users will welcome the significant improvements to Family Tree Maker's source management. The new and improved Edit Individual box simplifies the process of entering basic information about a person from the Pedigree View. New dialogues make it easier to see what sources are associated with a fact or individual. View all the sources associated with a single fact or person in the new Source Usage Report. Easily connect a single citation to multiple facts with the new Copy and Paste feature. The new copy and paste functions allow you to quickly transfer those sources to any other fact or individual in your file. You can also quickly identify and replace duplicate master sources without losing any information. If a source is merged from Ancestry.com the link to the online record will be included in your source so you can find that record in the future. You can quickly see how your sources are being used by viewing the new source usage display or generating a source usage report. There's also more room to store source citations and text, so you'll no longer need to leave out important information.
Change web-search criteria in various ways without ever changing your data in Family Tree Maker by using the improved Web Search, providing you with greater flexibility as you seek your ancestors. You can now change search criteria without modifying the data in your file. If you want to search for a person using her married name, you can do it right from the search results view! If you know what Ancestry.com databases you would like to search you can tell Family Tree Maker to focus on those databases and leave all of the others out, maximizing the time you spend on research. Change web-search criteria in various ways without ever changing your data in Family Tree Maker. Search on both married and maiden names and limit your search to specific records on Ancestry.com.
Merge Ancestry.com records and images with any individual in your records and edit citation information before merging. Another helpful addition: all records stored in Family Tree Maker 2006 can now be linked directly to the related source records on Ancestry.com. Several enhancements the Web Merge Wizard increase your ability to move data from Ancestry.com into your family file. You can now choose to merge Web data into any individual in your Family File with the click of a button. You can also merge an entire source citation, including any associated source images, directly into your file. That means you no longer need to note source details on a piece of paper and add it to your source citation after the merge is complete. And census, newspaper and other supporting images will be available right in your family file for future reference.
Get interesting and helpful research information about you family name. See where your ancestors are likely to have originated, the meaning of their names, where they lived, their most likely occupations and more.

Much of the input side of Family Tree Maker 2005 has been updated and reorganised to present an up to date Windows type look and feel, and to simplify the overall use of the program, including entering information, moving around within your family tree, and accessing all of Family Tree Maker's rich features and tools.
The new Family View replaces the old Family Page. See three generations instead of two, and up to eight children at once. The Edit Individual window (formerly the Individual Facts Card) has been enhanced to make it easier to add all the details about an individual in one central place. Another example is the streamlined toolbar with more intuitive buttons. The new design is much easier to use.
The all new Pedigree View is in addition to the Pedigree Tree, and allows you to quickly and easily navigate your family tree. You can view up to seven generations or as few as three. When navigating to other generations in your tree, animation helps you to see how the tree is changing so you don't lose your way. A side panel makes it easy to view anyone's pedigree through the click of a button, while also providing details on a selected individual. In addition to giving you a great visual overview of your family and making it easy to move around, the Pedigree View allows you to quickly analyse your tree and identify areas in need of research. The Pedigree View is extremely powerful and has lots of features that you will love.
Family Tree Maker 2005's new web search feature will automatically search Ancestry.com for more information on the people in your tree, and will rank the results to easily identify the ones that are most likely to be your ancestors. The Family Tree Maker Web Search Report makes it easy to compare the information found online with the people in your tree, so you can quickly determine which information is relevant to you. You can then mark the ones of interest to you and hide the ones that are irrelevant. Once you've identified the information you'd like to keep, you can easlily add that data right into your own tree using Family Tree Maker's Web Merge feature.
With Family Tree Maker's new automatic Web Search running in the background, you can instantly view and analyse search results through the Web Search Report. You can easily compare the information found online with the information you already have - side by side! Filter the results to show only the ones you're interested in - by their ranking, by the type of data (e.g., census record, birth record, etc.) or by a status set by you. You can mark a result as something to follow-up on, something to ignore or something you've seen and haven't decided upon yet. Family Tree Maker provides you with the tools to quickly and easily analyze a lot of information to make building your tree really easy!
Merging and appending data from the web has never been easier. Now Family Tree Maker takes the guesswork out of merging. An easy to use wizard guides you through the incorporation of each new record that you find. You can either accept Family Tree Maker's recommendations and add the data in one step, or you can use the wizard to choose which information to add, and whether to make the data 'preferred' or 'alternate' information. None of your existing information will be overwritten.
Now you can quickly jump to the people in your tree that you view most frequently by creating bookmarks or viewing your editing history. Bookmarks are set by you to identify the individuals you access frequently. The History feature automatically tracks the last 30 individuals you edited enabling you to jump to recently changed people. You can use bookmarks and history in both the Family View and the Pedigree View.
A number of smaller adjustments have been made to Family Tree Maker 2005 to improve your experience with the program. These include an automatic notification when program updates are available, a default date display that follows the standard genealogical (UK) format of dd mmm yyyy, a more intuitave toolbar, improvements to the GEDCOM importing process, a menu item for compacting the database, and improvements to the process of uploading information to a user home page.

Preserving your family's information is now easier than ever. The existing Family Page makes it easy to enter information about your family. Once you have entered information into the Family Page, the new Individual Facts Card allows you to easily display and edit the facts for a specific individual while you are in your current tree or report view. It also allows you to quickly enter or edit any information you want to record about an individual. Multiple tabs (Facts, Marriage, Address, Medical, Lineage, and Notes) correspond to each of the More About pages. But rather than navigating separately to each page, the Individual Facts Card allows you to edit any of them from one simple, easy-to-use dialog box. Just double-click (or single-click, depending on the view) on the individual and Family Tree Maker will automatically open the Individual Facts Card for the individual.
One of the most important tenets in genealogy is the accurate and thorough documentation of source information. Now you can add images - from a file, Scrapbook, scanner/camera, or Photo CD - to your source information. This is helpful because you can easily locate and return to the original source if you need to, plus, you have a record of which sources you've already checked.
Easily track your source images - when you print the Documented Events, Bibliography or create a customer report that lists sources, you can immediately tell if there is an attached source image in your file. The source will list "Image(s) Available" next to the source. Print the source image to store in an album or scrapbook. When you print the source image, Family Tree Maker will automatically print the source title next to it.
Now you have even more options for creating heirloom-quality printouts. In addition to the wide selection of trees available in Family Tree Maker, you can now show the complete heritage of a family member by also including siblings of direct ancestors in all the Ancestor Trees. Easily see relations to aunts and uncles. Produce a compact, manageable tree that still provides a great amount of information. Once included, siblings will appear in both standard and vertical Ancestor trees as well as in the ancestor portion of standard Hourglass trees.
Scrapbooks are a wonderful way to catalog and preserve precious memories of an individual. Now, you can also print images that you've preserved directly from the Scrapbook.
Store the complete contact information of your family members. With the increased popularity of computers both at home and the workplace, e-mail addresses have become a common part of everyday life for many of us. Family Tree Maker now includes a field on the More About Address page that allows you to capture this information for individuals in your Family File. You can also print the email on all the reports where you can print address information: labels, cards, address report, custom reports.
For your convenience, Family Tree Maker now includes a list of the most recently viewed files at the bottom of the File Menu. Whether you are viewing a file sent by a relative, or browsing an entry in the World Family Tree, you'll find it easier than ever to move between multiple files as you compare potential additions to your own Family File.
Family Tree Maker version 9.0 is now Windows® ME Compliant and has been tested preliminarily on a beta version of Windows® XP.
To make it easier to answer your questions, we are continuing to enhance the Help features in Family Tree Maker. Search for information on specific features by simply entering a key word or phrase into the Index tab of the Help dialog box.
